PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND Air Cadet League  Effective Speaking Committee Report 2023

The National Effective Speaking Competition was held virtually 03 June 2023. For more information click HERE.
PEI Provincial Effective Speaking Competition was held 15 April 2023 as part of the Semi-Annual Meeting at Anson’s, Slemon Park.

PEI Provincial Competition

Prizes $200 Gold, $100 Silver, $75 Bronze for PEI competition.  $25 gift cards to the judges for their participation.  Medals and pins are also awarded.  Thank you very much to the Kiwanis Club of Charlottetown for sponsoring this competition.

On guard for thee: serving in the Canadian Armed Forces

Highlights

In 2021, 97,625 Canadians were reported in the census as serving in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) as members of the Regular Force or Primary Reserve Force.

For more than 100 years, women have contributed to Canada’s military heritage and, in 2021, almost one-fifth of currently serving Canadian military personnel enumerated in the census were women.

The CAF were younger on average (36.2 years old) than the employed labour force overall (41.9), but currently serving women were older than their male counterparts.

Ontario (35.4%) and Quebec (20.2%) had the highest share of currently serving military personnel.

Belleville–Quinte West and Kingston had the largest share of military personnel among Canada’s census metropolitan areas, given that they are both in close proximity to military bases.

In 2021, 461,240 Canadians were counted as Veterans in the census.

Standard Aero donation buys Biathlon Gear for Air Cadets

A great big thank you to Standard Aero , Summerside, Slemon Park for their generous contribution to the Air Cadet League of  Canada – PEI .  The funds bought Biathaon gear for all four Squadrons.

Biathlon is a combination of cross-country skiing and marksmanship. It requires tremendous endurance and strength as well as skill and precision. Unpredictable elements including weather and wind conditions make this outdoor sport fun and rewarding challenge that thousands of cadets participate in each year.

Cadet bi-athletes participate in a series of competitions at the local level that culminate in provincial/territorial competitions and an annual National Cadet Biathlon Championship. Many of our cadets have long reaped the benefits of competitive biathlon programs at the local, zone, provincial/territorial and national levels. Whether you are aiming for success or achievement in biathlon/physical fitness or just interested in participating in an exciting sport –
there are golden opportunities available through cadet biathlon.

Air Cadet comes out strong with silver medal win in Effective Speaking

For Daisy Kinch, winning the silver medal in the PEI Provincial Air Cadet League Effective Speaking competition was a mark of just how far she’s come in terms of speaking in front of an audience.

“I was really excited that I was really proud of myself, because I’ve always had a lot of anxiety, especially when I was younger,” she said.

Even speaking in front of her class was often difficult.

“I’m in French, and I’ve been with those kids since I was in the seventh grade, but I’m still terrified of talking in front of them,” she said. “So it felt really good to know that I had won an award for something that held me back for so long, and that I finally did it and that I wasn’t scared to speak in public anymore.”

Ms Kinch, who has the rank of Flight Sergeant with 641 West Prince Squadron, took part in competition on April 30, one of six Air Cadets from across the province to do so. The aim of the competition is to provide an opportunity for Air Cadets to acquire effective speaking skills through instruction and practice in a structured and competitive environment, while also increasing individual self-confidence.Daisy Kinch

This is the fifth year Ms Kinch has taken part, winning the local competition twice, but the first time she’s had the opportunity to compete at the provincial level.

Major S. Laporte assuming new position as NB/PE Area OC.

The Air Cadet League – PEI welcomes the new NB/PE Area OC. and looks forward to working with him. 

Major Sébastien Laporte, CD, is a native of Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec. In 1987, he joined the Cadet Corps (CC) No.1 6th

Battalion Royal 22e Regiment (the oldest cadet corps in Canada, founded in 1832). He reached the position of
Regimental Sergeant Major (Cdt Chief Warrant Officer) in 1991. After serving as a civilian instructor in charge of training,
in May 1994, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) in the Reserve with the Cadet Instructor Cadre. Read the full bio on Maj. Laporte.
